Dr. José E.
Barboza-Corona
I am a chemist, pharmaceutical, and biologist from the University of Guanajuato; I hold a Doctorate in Science in Biotechnology from CINVESTAV, Mexico. I completed a postdoctoral position at the University of California under Dr. Brian Federici and had a sabbatical stay at Stanford University with Dr. Drew Endy.
I have been awarded several fellowships, including the Fulbright-COMEXUS, UCMEXUS, and CONAHCyT. Additionally, I am a level 3 member of the National System of Researchers and a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. I have received the UG Research Award 2025, named Wenceslao X. López Martín del Campo, in Biology-Chemistry from the University of Guanajuato. I was the Academic Affairs Provost at the University of Guanajuato, the Academic Affairs Provost of the Campus Irapuato-Salamanca, and the Coordinator of Research and Academic Affairs of the same Campus.
Currently, I am a professor in the Food Department and in the Graduate Program in BioScience (Master's and Doctorate) at the University of Guanajuato, Mexico. In my free time, I enjoy science fiction and action movies, exercising, playing the guitar, teaching, reading and writing about science, walking with my pets, doing household chores, and spending quality time with my family.

Dr. Luz E.
Casados-Vázquez
To date, I am "Catedrática CONAHCyT-Universidad de Guanajuato" in the program "Researchers for Mexico." I received my Doctorate in Sciences in Biotechnology from the CINVESTAV, Mexico. I am a member of the National System of Researchers, level 1. I enjoy running, swimming, teaching, writing, reading, and spending time with my family.

Dr. Rubén
Salcedo-Hernández
I am a Titular Professor at the University of Guanajuato. I received my doctorate in Science from the University of Guanajuato in Experimental Biology. Currently, I am a member of the National System of Researchers, level 1. As a hobby, I enjoy opening and repairing the laboratory equipment.

PhD, DSc
Students
MSc María Fernanda Mendoza-Acosta

I enjoy challenges and am working hard on a cell-free platform to express proteins of biotechnological significance.
MSc America S.
Gaona-Mendoza

In the laboratory, I am working hard to develop whole-cell biosensors that detect pathogenic bacteria by utilizing quorum sensing. Graduated on July 25, 2025.
MSc Yolanda Daniela
Carrillo-Huerta

I love animals, which is why I am producing pet food through the synthesis of animal proteins in yeast and precision fermentation, also known as cellular agriculture.
M.C. Daniela
Ruiz de Anda

I am producing variants of antimicrobial peptides, specifically bacteriocins, through rational design in order to enhance their antibacterial properties.
MSc Cristóbal Castañeda Ramirez

As an engineer, I am conducting research on bioethanol production from nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica) biomass using the biorefinery concept.
Master
Students
Ing. Kathia Ivonne
Martínez González
I am a food engineer focusing on food security by developing an isothermal protocol for the easy and rapid detection of Listeria in cheese.

Ing. Lucero
Marquez Sánchez
I am excited because I will construct bioparts based on synthetic promoters from Bacillus thuringiensis, the most important microbial insecticide worlwide.
IBQ Leonardo Daniel
Hernández Vidal
I aim to reduce pesticide use by developing bioformulations that utilize antimicrobial peptides for the biocontrol of plant pathogenic bacteria.

Undergraduate
Student in internships

Jorge, Aranza, Diana
We are undergraduate students from the Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Irapuato (ITESI). We are happy because we are doing genetic engineering advised by graduate students, Postdocs and Principal Investigators.
Postdoc
Dr. Sheila A.
Martínez Zavala
I am developing rapid protocols to detect pathogenic bacteria. Additionally, I am interested in constructing bacterial bioparts for protein expression in a cell-free system as part of a toolbox kit in synthetic biology.

Dr. Victor Manuel
Carballo Uicab
I am focused on food security, utilizing synthetic biology tools to design and construct RNA-based biosensors for detecting foodborne pathogenic bacteria.

Dr. Cynthia Paola
Rangel Chávez
I am passionate about bioinformatics and designing bioparts using Bacillus thuringiensis promoters as tools for synthetic biology.

Dr. Karen E.
González Ponce
I am diligently working to express membrane proteins in cell-free systems for biosensor construction.
